Open Toasters

A commercial open toaster toasts bread, rolls and sandwiches on an open rack under or over an element, rather than in enclosed slots, so the operator can see the product and turn it. Cafes, pubs and hotels use them for breakfast toast and toasted sandwiches.

A toaster griller uses an open element over a rack, so it toasts bread on the rack and also grills or finishes items such as cheese toasties, melts and bacon. That makes it more flexible on a bench than a bread-only slot toaster.

Both use an element over an open rack. A salamander is generally set up for grilling, glazing and finishing plated food, while an open toaster is configured for toasting bread and rolls in volume. Some benchtop models are built to do both jobs.

Allow for the width of the unit plus clearance around it, because an open element radiates heat and the operator needs room to load and unload. Check the depth against your bench and the clearance to any shelf or extraction hood above it.
