Knife Guards & Case and Bags

A chef knife cover, or blade guard, is a slotted sleeve that slides over a knife edge to protect it in storage and in transit. It stops the blade contacting other steel that would dull it, and prevents cuts when reaching into a drawer or bag.

A knife roll is a fabric wrap with sewn pockets that rolls around the knives and ties or buckles shut, making it light and compact to carry. A knife case is a rigid or semi-rigid satchel that gives more impact protection and often locks.

Store knives with edges covered and separated, using blade guards, a magnetic rail, a knife block or a slotted drawer insert. Loose knives thrown together in a drawer dull each other and create a serious hand injury risk for anyone reaching in.

Match the guard to the blade length and blade width rather than the knife overall. A guard should cover the full cutting edge including the heel, and grip firmly enough that it stays in place when the knife is lifted out of a bag.

Many knife rolls and cases include additional pockets sized for a sharpening steel, a stone or small tools alongside the blade slots. Check the number and length of the pockets against the kit you actually carry before choosing a bag.
