Choosing the Right Disposable Containers for Your Business
Disposable containers cover takeaway tubs, soup cups, deli portion cups, sushi trays and salad bowls. Hospitality Connect stocks the trade range across PET, PP, PLA, bagasse, kraft and aluminium formats — sized to match the AU takeaway and meal-kit market.
Range overview
- Round takeaway tubs: 8oz, 12oz, 16oz, 32oz with PE-lined or PP lid options for soups, dips and meal portions.
- Square and rectangular containers: 500ml, 750ml, 1000ml for rice bowls, salad mains and meal-kit portion control.
- Sushi trays and bento sets: Black or compostable bagasse trays with clear lids for 6-, 8-, 12-piece sushi or bento.
- Deli portion cups: 1oz, 2oz, 4oz portion cups for sauces, dressings and condiments — clear PP for visibility.
- Aluminium foil containers: Smoothwall and rib-wall aluminium for hot mains and oven-direct heating.
Material and sustainability
PET is recyclable and clear — best for cold and ambient products. PP tolerates microwave heating up to 100°C — best for hot soups and meals. PLA and CPLA are compostable but only in commercial composting facilities — confirm your council accepts them. Bagasse (sugar-cane fibre) is compostable and oven-tolerant to 220°C — strong choice for hot meals and meal kits. Aluminium foil is endlessly recyclable but adds weight to delivery costs. Match material to food temperature, fat content and your sustainability claim.
Use cases and pack sizes
- Standard inner pack: 25–50 containers per inner sleeve; 250–1000 per carton.
- Lid compatibility: Always trial 5 lids on 5 containers before committing to a pallet.
- Microwave use: PP-rated containers carry the microwave-safe stamp; PET will deform.
- Tamper-evident: Many delivery platforms now require tamper-evident lids — specify on order.
- Custom-print runs: 4–6 week lead time for branded sleeves and lids on bulk orders.
A common oversight in disposable container procurement: testing only the container, not the container-and-lid stack under transit. A lid that fits snug at the cafe pops loose at 60°C in a hot delivery bag. Test the closed unit at delivery temperature with a 30cm drop test before committing to a pallet rate. PP and CPET tolerate microwave heating; PET and PLA distort. Aluminium foil works for hot mains but adds delivery weight. Match the material to the food temperature and the customer's intended use — a meal-kit customer reheating in a microwave needs PP, not PLA. Procurement note: most disposable container suppliers offer pallet rates with 4-week lead times and delivery direct to back-of-house. Establish a relationship with one or two suppliers and build a 6–8 week reorder cycle; emergency top-ups at retail rates double the unit cost and erode margin.

More about Disposable Containers
Why buy disposable containers from Hospitality Connect
- Trade pricing on volume: Bulk pricing scales sharply for service kits, pack-out fits and repeat orders — ask for a multi-line quote.
- Range depth: Multiple finish, size and grade options inside each line so you don't compromise on the look.
- Compliant materials: Food-contact items are food-grade certified; uniforms and disposables meet AU service standards.
- Same-day quoting: Specifier requests typically returned within one business day.
- Replenishment terms: Account customers can set repeat order schedules to avoid stock-outs.
Disposable containers care and longevity
- Store flat and away from grease: Cardboard wicks oil and loses structure when stacked near a fryer.
- FIFO rotation: Older stock first — printed coatings and adhesives degrade after 12 months in heat.
- Keep humidity below 60% RH: High humidity warps boxes and softens napkin fibre.
- Match container to food temperature: PLA and CPLA have temperature ceilings; use bagasse or PET when out of range.
- Recycling stream: Train staff on what's compostable, what's recyclable and what's general waste — many lookalikes go to landfill.
- Watch the lid fit before bulk-buying: A lid that pops in transit cancels the cost saving.
