Melamine suits venues where breakage is the running cost rather than presentation, because it survives a drop onto a hard floor. Within the range, tumbler capacity and cup size are the practical decisions: espresso cups suit short black and piccolo service, while tumblers cover water, juice and soft drink on the same table. Colour can also be used to code portion sizes, diets or service areas, which is common in aged care. Melamine washes in a commercial dishwasher but is not made for microwave or oven use.
