As a rule of thumb, allow 450–600mm of trough length per station. A 1200mm trough comfortably serves two; 1800mm serves three.

A wash trough is a long, continuous stainless steel basin that allows several people to wash their hands at the same time. They're used in commercial kitchens, childcare centres, schools, aged care facilities and industrial washrooms wherever a single hand basin would create a queue — or wherever a bigger bowl is needed for wash-up.

A hand basin is a single bowl for one user. A trough is a continuous bowl serving multiple stations from one waste outlet. Troughs are cheaper per station, faster to clean because there's no joinery between bowls, and better suited to high-traffic areas. For food premises, note that a dedicated hand wash facility must still be provided separately from food preparation sinks.

In food premises, yes. AS 4674-2004 requires taps that operate hands free at all hand basins, which in practice means knee-operated, foot-operated, sensor or timed-flow tapware. Decide on your tapware before ordering, because it determines whether you need a trough with pre-punched tap holes or a no-tap-hole model for wall-mounted fittings.

Grade 304 stainless steel throughout. It's the standard specification for commercial food environments — corrosion resistant, non-porous, and it stands up to commercial sanitisers without pitting. Marine-grade 316 can be sourced for coastal, chemical or high-chloride environments on request.
